Tänään löydätte luukustamme vähän tietoa historiasta, mistä ja miten joulunvietto on saanut alkunsa.
Monelle tulee ensimmäisenä mieleen joulun kristillinen tausta: "Joo sitä alettiin viettää koska Jeesus synty sillon ja kirkko pakotti", mutta joulun perintet ylettyvät paljon tätä kauemmas, aikaisempien yhteisöjen juhlien viettoon.
Muinaiset mesopotamialaiset juhlivat zakmuk-juhlaa. Mesopotamialaisten oli Uutena vuotena osallistuttava jumalansa Mardukin taisteluun kaaoksen hirviöitä vastaan. Ihmisten tehtävänä oli uutena vuotena puhdistaa itsensä edellisen vuoden pahoista teoistaan sekä uudistaa se voima, jonka mennyt vuosi oli häneltä vienyt. Zakmukia vietettiin tämän itsensä puhdistamisen vuoksi. Silloiset hallitsijat valitsivat pahoista teoistaan vastaavan "syntipukin", jolle kuningas luovutti vallan. Kun syntipukki oli tapettu, hän seurasi Mardukia manalaan, ja taisteli siellä hänen rinnallaan. Samaan aikaan kuningas vannoi maan päällä, ettei ollut tehnyt pahaa jumalaa vastaan, ja näin pappien pyhittämänä sai valtansa takaisin.

Persialaiset ja babyloanialaiset juhlivat Zakmukia vastaavaa juhlaa, sacaeta, joka vastasi ajallisesti meidän viettämäämme joulua ja ajatuksellisesti suomalaisten halloweenin edeltäjä -juhlaa kekriä. Sacaen juhlinta siirtyi persialaisilta ja babylonialaisilta Kreikkaan, jossa juhla järjestettiin vanhan ylijumalan Kronoksen kunniaksi. Roomassa juhla vietettiin Kronosta vastaavan Saturnuksen kunniaksi. Vaikka Saturnuksella oli oma juhlansa Antiikin Roomassa, ei hän jumalana ollut suosittu kansan keskuudessa.
Norjalaiset viettivät talvipäivänseisaustaan julea 25.12.-6.1. samalla tavalla, kun me nykyään vietämme joulua.
Joulun kristilliset perinteet eivät ole alunperin niin kovin kristillisiä. Jeesuksen juhliminen aloitettiin hänen äitinsä Neitsyt Marian kautta. Neitsyt Maria oli aikaisemmin nähty vain maallisena välittäjänä, mutta pian häntä alettiin palvoa Taivaallisena kuningattarena. Tämän Neitsyt Marian palvomisen tausta on todennäköisesti Egyptiläisessä mytologiassa, jossa Isis (Muinaisen egyptiläisen uskon jumalakaartin äitijumala) synnytti jumala Osiriksen pojan Horuksen. Kristinuskon myötä Isiksen temppelit muutettiin Neitsyt Marian temppeleiksi.
Katolinen kirkko veti Jeesuksen syntymäpäivän hyvin mahdollisesti täysin hatusta. Jeesuksen todelliseksi syntymäajaksi arvioidaan usein loppukesä tai syksy, mutta juhla haluttiin siirtää joulukuun loppuun korvaamaan vanhojen pakanallisten jumalien juhlia (taktinen ratkaisu).
Ja tästä kaikesta syntyi meidän perheiden läheisyyttä sekä rauhallisuuden aikaa vaaliva joulumme.

Today's hatch of the Christmas calendar will reveal the history behind Christmas: where and how it all started.
Most people will immediately think of the Christian background of CHRISTmas when prompted: "Yeah people started celebrating it because Jesus was born and the church made them do it" Christmas traditions stretch far further than that, for they have their origin in the celebrations of pre-Christian societies.
The ancient Mesopotamians celebrated Zakmuk. During New Year they had to stand with their god Marduk, and take part in his battle against the monsters of chaos. The task of man during New Year was to purge himself of the evil deeds of the last yea, and to renew the force that the past year had taken from him. Zakmuk was celebrated as a time for this self-purification ritual. The contemporary rulers chose a "scapegoat" who they would blame for their evil deeds of the past year, and to whom they would give power for a moment. When the scapegoat was killed, he followed Marduk to the underworld, where he would fight on his side against the monsters of chaos. At the same time, in the world of humans, the king swore that he had done no evil against their god. The priests would anoint the monarch, and he would get back the power that he had yielded to the scapegoat.
The Persians and Babylonians celebrated Sacae, a celebration similar to Zakmuk, which temporally corresponds with the Christmas we spend, and ideologically it is similar to the Finnish precursor to Halloween: Kekri. Celebrating Sacae passed on to Greece after wars fought with Persia, and there they celebrated it to praise Cronus, the titan of harvest. In Ancient Rome Saturn was the god they dedicated the same celebration to. Even though Saturnalia was an important feast in Ancient Rome, the god himself was not popular among the people.
Germanic peoples celebrated the winter solstice, Yule, between the 25th of December and the 6th of January. Their celebrations share some traditions with our modern Christmas.
Even the traditions of Christmas that we think of as Christian aren't Christian in origin. Celebrating Jesus was started due to his mother: the Virgin Mary. She had earlier only been seen as a terrestrial conduit for the Holy Spirit, but later on people started worshiping her as the heavenly queen. This praising of the Virgin probably stems from Egyptian mythology where Isis (The mother of the Egyptian gods) gave birth to the son of Osiris: Horus. As coptic Christianity spread in Egypt, the ancient temples of Isis were converted into temples of the Virgin Mary.
It is probable that the Roman Catholic Church invented the date of birth of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His true date of birth is estimated to be between the end of summer and mid-autumn, but the catholics wanted to transfer the date to the end of December in order to replace old pagan celebrations. This was a very important tactical solution for the eventual spread of Christianity.
From all this was born the family-cherishing and peace-loving Christmas we spend today.
