Tätä kuulee yksi jos toinenkin tuttaviltaan, sukulaisiltaan ja jopa viime hetken jouluostoksilla kaupan kassamyyjältä. Sitä me blogivastaavatkin haluamme kaikille teille opiskelijoille toivottaa, rauhallista joulua.

Voiko kiirettä unohtaa muutamaksi päiväksi tai voiko siitä pästä eroon jopa kokonaan? Kaikki ne kirjoitelmat, joiden deadlinet lähestyvät loman loputtua, anna niiden hetkeksi olla. Anna itsellesi lupa siihen, ettei sinulla ole kiire mihinkään. Sinulla on aikaa, aikaa itsellesi, aikaa siihen mihin haluat. Sano tämä ääneen myös heille, joille et ole pystynyt aikaasi omistamaan. Nyt joululomalla sinulla on aikaa heillekkin. Tartuta lähimmäisiisi rauhallisuus.

Have a peaceful Christmas and a happy new year!" This is a phrase that one can hear in the end of December in Finland from one's friends, family, and even cashiers checking out your last-minute Christmas gifts. That is what we, the blog team, wish to all you students: a peaceful Christmas. Can one forget about the everyday hurries for a moment, or even overcome them forever? Let all the deadlines that are quickly approaching after the holidays be for a moment. Give yourself the permission not to hurry and stress. You have time: time for yourself and for anything that you want right now. Say this out loud to everyone to whom you couldn't give your time to. During the Christmas holiday you have time for them as well Spread peace to all your loved ones.

Give yourself a peaceful and hurry-free Christmas as a gift. You've deserved it.

In the last hatch you found something to read for Christmas, but today you can listen to some Christmas music to put yourself into the mood on the day before Christmas Eve. I don't know about you, but I certainly have some difficulties with getting into a Christmas mood with all this gray slush on the streets. Tänään löydätte luukustamme vähän tietoa historiasta, mistä ja miten joulunvietto on saanut alkunsa.

Monelle tulee ensimmäisenä mieleen joulun kristillinen tausta: "Joo sitä alettiin viettää koska Jeesus synty sillon ja kirkko pakotti", mutta joulun perintet ylettyvät paljon tätä kauemmas, aikaisempien yhteisöjen juhlien viettoon.

Muinaiset mesopotamialaiset juhlivat zakmuk-juhlaa. Mesopotamialaisten oli Uutena vuotena osallistuttava jumalansa Mardukin taisteluun kaaoksen hirviöitä vastaan. Ihmisten tehtävänä oli uutena vuotena puhdistaa itsensä edellisen vuoden pahoista teoistaan sekä uudistaa se voima, jonka mennyt vuosi oli häneltä vienyt. Zakmukia vietettiin tämän itsensä puhdistamisen vuoksi. Silloiset hallitsijat valitsivat pahoista teoistaan vastaavan "syntipukin", jolle kuningas luovutti vallan. Kun syntipukki oli tapettu, hän seurasi Mardukia manalaan, ja taisteli siellä hänen rinnallaan. Samaan aikaan kuningas vannoi maan päällä, ettei ollut tehnyt pahaa jumalaa vastaan, ja näin pappien pyhittämänä sai valtansa takaisin.

Persialaiset ja babyloanialaiset juhlivat Zakmukia vastaavaa juhlaa, sacaeta, joka vastasi ajallisesti meidän viettämäämme joulua ja ajatuksellisesti suomalaisten halloweenin edeltäjä -juhlaa kekriä. Sacaen juhlinta siirtyi persialaisilta ja babylonialaisilta Kreikkaan, jossa juhla järjestettiin vanhan ylijumalan Kronoksen kunniaksi. Roomassa juhla vietettiin Kronosta vastaavan Saturnuksen kunniaksi. Vaikka Saturnuksella oli oma juhlansa Antiikin Roomassa, ei hän jumalana ollut suosittu kansan keskuudessa.

Norjalaiset viettivät talvipäivänseisaustaan julea 25.12.-6.1. samalla tavalla, kun me nykyään vietämme joulua. 

Joulun kristilliset perinteet eivät ole alunperin niin kovin kristillisiä. Jeesuksen juhliminen aloitettiin hänen äitinsä Neitsyt Marian kautta. Neitsyt Maria oli aikaisemmin nähty vain maallisena välittäjänä, mutta pian häntä alettiin palvoa Taivaallisena kuningattarena. Tämän Neitsyt Marian palvomisen tausta on todennäköisesti Egyptiläisessä mytologiassa, jossa Isis (Muinaisen egyptiläisen uskon jumalakaartin äitijumala) synnytti jumala Osiriksen pojan Horuksen. Kristinuskon myötä Isiksen temppelit muutettiin Neitsyt Marian temppeleiksi.

Katolinen kirkko veti Jeesuksen syntymäpäivän hyvin mahdollisesti täysin hatusta. Jeesuksen todelliseksi syntymäajaksi arvioidaan usein loppukesä tai syksy, mutta juhla haluttiin siirtää joulukuun loppuun korvaamaan vanhojen pakanallisten jumalien juhlia (taktinen ratkaisu).

Ja tästä kaikesta syntyi meidän perheiden läheisyyttä sekä rauhallisuuden aikaa vaaliva joulumme.

Today's hatch of the Christmas calendar will reveal the history behind Christmas: where and how it all started.

Most people will immediately think of the Christian background of CHRISTmas when prompted: "Yeah people started celebrating it because Jesus was born and the church made them do it" Christmas traditions stretch far further than that, for they have their origin in the celebrations of pre-Christian societies.

The ancient Mesopotamians celebrated Zakmuk. During New Year they had to stand with their god Marduk, and take part in his battle against the monsters of chaos. The task of man during New Year was to purge himself of the evil deeds of the last yea, and to renew the force that the past year had taken from him. Zakmuk was celebrated as a time for this self-purification ritual. The contemporary rulers chose a "scapegoat" who they would blame for their evil deeds of the past year, and to whom they would give power for a moment. When the scapegoat was killed, he followed Marduk to the underworld, where he would fight on his side against the monsters of chaos. At the same time, in the world of humans, the king swore that he had done no evil against their god. The priests would anoint the monarch, and he would get back the power that he had yielded to the scapegoat.

The Persians and Babylonians celebrated Sacae, a celebration similar to Zakmuk,  which temporally corresponds with the Christmas we spend, and ideologically it is similar to the Finnish precursor to Halloween: Kekri. Celebrating Sacae passed on to Greece after wars fought with Persia, and there they celebrated it to praise Cronus, the titan of harvest. In Ancient Rome Saturn was the god they dedicated the same celebration to. Even though Saturnalia was an important feast in Ancient Rome, the god himself was not popular among the people.

Germanic peoples celebrated the winter solstice, Yule, between the 25th of December and the 6th of January. Their celebrations share some traditions with our modern Christmas.

Even the traditions of Christmas that we think of as Christian aren't Christian in origin. Celebrating Jesus was started due to his mother: the Virgin Mary. She had earlier only been seen as a terrestrial conduit for the Holy Spirit, but later on people started worshiping her as the heavenly queen. This praising of the Virgin probably stems from Egyptian mythology where Isis (The mother of the Egyptian gods) gave birth to the son of Osiris: Horus. As coptic Christianity spread in Egypt, the ancient temples of Isis were converted into temples of the Virgin Mary.

It is probable that the Roman Catholic Church invented the date of birth of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His true date of birth is estimated to be between the end of summer and mid-autumn, but the catholics wanted to transfer the date to the end of December in order to replace old pagan celebrations. This was a very important tactical solution for the eventual spread of Christianity.

From all this was born the family-cherishing and peace-loving Christmas we spend today.

Ympäristöraadilla on ollut kiireinen vuosi takana. Vuoden aikana olemme järjestäneet monia tapahtumia, mukaan lukien leffailtoja, yritysvierailuja, eri myyjäisiä sekä Helsingin tulevaisuus- aiheisen paneelikeskustelun. Tänä vuonna osallistuja-aktiivisuus on ollut korkealla, joka on ollut osasyynä toimintamme monipuolisuuteen. Toivottavasti sama meno jatkuu myös ensi vuoden puolelle!

The Green Team has had a busy year. During the year we’ve organized many events including movie nights, company visits, bake/smoothie sales and a panel discussion on Helsinki’s future. This year’s participant activity has been extremely high and that’s just one of the reasons for our diverse (¡and greatly fun!) activities. We hope the trend will continue next year as well!

Now that the official part is over, I’m going to use my executive rights and list answers to questions that the student council never even asked me. Here goes:

Joulukalenterin 15. luukku

It's the 15th of December which means christmas is just around the corner with less than 10 days to go! Yesterday we celebrated our traditional xmas lounge. The hall was filled with christmas lights, sofas and tinsel which added a spark of christmas joy to the otherwise plain hall. We ate delicious homemade joulutortut as well as lots of gingerbread biscuits. We were also treated to some wonderful live music courtesy of our very own Suvi (an IB2) as well as Aleksi, an old IB student. Not only this but we also danced the "liittotanssi" together. Thank you to everyone who sipped on glögi and had fun with us.

Tänään on 15. marraskuuta, mikä tarkoittaa, että joulu on aivan nurkan takana! Eilen juhlimme perinteistä X-mas Loungea. Juhlasali oli koristeltu jouluvaloilla, sohvilla ja jouluisilla koristeilla, mitkä lisäsivät tavallisesti vaisuun saliin juhlan tuntua. Söimme herkullisia itse leivottuja joulutorttuja sekä OPKH:n ostamia pipareita. Saimme myös nauttia upeasta livemusiikista oman IB2 opiskelijamme Suvin sekä entisen IB-opiskelijamme Aleksin toimesta. Tämän lisäksi tanssimme illalla vielä yhdessä, mm. liittotanssia. Kiitos kaikille, jotka tulitte kanssamme juomaan glögiä ja pitämään hauskaa.

Oikein hyvää iltaa Ressut! Näin alkuun muistutus: Vielä on aikaa sunnuntaihin 18.12. asti osallistua blogimme valokuvauskilpailuun! Ohjeet kilpailuun löydät täältä! 

Toissapäivänä 13.12. koulussammekin vietettiin Lucian päivää. Kolmannen tunnin alkupuolella varmasti kaikki paikalla olleet bongasivat Lucia-kulkueemme laulamassa, ja jakamassa pipareita pitkin koulua. Ilmaisen piparin ja kerrassaan loistokkaan laulun takana oli muutakin kuin vain viihdearvoa. Miksi Lucian päivää vietetään?

Historia on katolisen kirkon opeissa, Pyhän Lucian muistamisessa. Juhlan ajatuksena on pyhimys Lucian tuoma valo pimeyteen. Lucian legenda on kotoisin Italiasta Sisilian saarelta, jossa Lucia koki marttyyrisen kuolemansa noin vuonna 304 jaa. Lucian kuoleman taustalla oli hänen voimakas tahtonsa pysyä neitsyenä hartaan uskomisensa takia. Luciaan ihastui muuan kosija, joka kuitenkin pettyneenä ja mustasukkaisuuden riivaamana ilmiantoi Lucian viranomaisille kielletyn kristinuskon harjoittamisesta. Lucia yritettiin viedä bordelliin häpäistäväksi rangaistukseksi, mutta legendan mukaan Pyhä henki täytti Lucian, eikä häntä saatu liikutettua. Edes tuli vahingoittant häntä. Lucia koki kuolemansa lopulta miekan kautta.

Everyone who had classes after lunch surely saw our Lucia-procession singing sweetly and handing out gingerbread cookies to everyone. However, there are a lot of other important things behind our Lucia-procession than handing out free cookies; why do we celebrate this day?

The history of commemorating St. Lucia lies in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The idea behind the celebration is the light that St. Lucia brings to the pervasive darkness of winter. The legend hails from Italy, the island of Sicily, where Lucia died as a martyr in circa 304 C.E. The reason for this martyrdom was Lucia's strong will to stay a virgin due to her pious ways. One suitor became infatuated with this saintly woman, and when he got rejected he, filled with jealousy and disappointment, told the Roman authorities that Lucia was practising the forbidden Christian faith. The legend says the the Holy Spirit entered Lucia and made her immovable as the authorities tried to drag her to a brothel to punish her. Even fire couldn't harm her! In the end, Lucia died by the sword.

Joulukalenterin 13. luukku

Tämän päivän luukussamme sekoittuvat työ ja huvi! Kenellekkään ei varmasti ole epäselvää, mitä koulumme opettajat, vahtimestari, siivoojat ja muu henkilökunta tekevät. Mutta kolmannentoista päivän luukussa haluamme valoittaa teille hieman Ressun kulissien takaista toimintaa. Hyvä opiskelijakunta, saammeko esitellä: Koulusihteerimme Tarja Ryan!

Tarja on toiminut koulussamme sihteerinä nyt noin puolentoista vuoden ajan. Sihteerin työ herättää varmasti monissa stereotyyppisen ajatuksen paljosta toimistotyöstä sekä paperien pyörittämisestä. Nämä tietysti sisältyvät siihen myös, mutta mitä muuta Tarjan toimenkuvaan täällä Ressussa kuuluu?

Opiskelijarekisterin seuraaminen. Kun paljon pelätty abivuotemme lähestyy, kirjoituksissa YTL:n vaatimat tiedot lähtevät Tarjan käsien kautta. Hän myös hoitaa kaikki KELA:n matkatukiasiat. Sinäkin siis todennäköisesti matkustit tänään hyvällä omallatunnolla, tietäen että saat kelalta korvausta koulumatkoistasi. Näin ei olisi, jos et oli hakemusta Tarjan kautta lähettänyt. Hän on myös vastuussa koulumme taloushallinnosta, mihin sisältyy vuosittaisen budjetin tekeminen yhteydessä rehtoreiden kanssa, talouden seuranta, tilaukset kouluun sekä laskutus. Tarja hoitaa myös kaikenlaisia yleismaallisia opiskelijoiden ongelmia paperien ja lomakkeiden ihmeellisessä maailmassa.

No millaista on toimia Ressun kaltaisessa koulussa koulusihteerinä?

-Tykkään kovasti. Paikka on kiva ja työyhteisö mitä mainioin. Ihanat nuoret ovat yksi parhaimpia asioita työssäni. Työ on myös mukavan vaihtelevaa.

Koetko työsi stressaavaksi?

-En erityisen, poikkeuksena mainitsen kuitenkin monet deadlinet, joita on noudatettava tarkasti. Etenkin ylioppilaskirjoitusten lähestyessä on pidettävä huolta ilmoitautumispapereiden aikataulussa pysymisestä.

Millainen on koulusihteerimme joulu (nyt kun joulukalenteriin ollaan juttua tekemässä)?

-Vietän joulua pienen suvun kesken vanhojen perinteiden mukaisesti. Laitamme kotona ruokaa, koristelemme paikat kauniiksi, juomme paljon glögiä ja etsimme riisipuuron seasta manteleita. Vaikka olenkin jouluihminen, jäävät hommat usein melko viime tinkaan. Kiire tuo kuitenkin omaa tunnelmaansa jouluun.

Tarja haluaa vielä toivottaa kaikille ressuille ihanaa ja rauhallista joulun aikaa. Eikö joululoma olekaan se aika, kun kirjoitetaan ne kaikki aineiden kirjoitelmat, ja tehdään kaikki hommat rästistä? Muistakaa levätä!

Behind today’s door is a mix of work and joy! We doubt it is unclear to anyone what our school’s teachers, janitors, cleaners or other workers do. Hence, sneaking behind our 13th door is someone rather mysterious to many of us. She is the woman behind it all: Introducing our school secretary Tarja Ryan!

Tarja has been our school secretary for one and half years now. The image of a secretary might be that stereotypical conception of someone who’s battling the war with the never-ending paperwork and other office stuff, thus we wanted to find out what else her job includes as she’s pretty much holding us all together.

The following of the student register. And when the furious senior year is approaching, she’ll be the one to deliver all the required information to YTL (might do it for the IB too, that remains a mystery). She is also dealing with all the KELA stuff, so she’s the one who takes care that you’ll get yo cold cash on time, peeps. You would be broke if she wasn’t here, believe me. No Barbas or so. She is also in charge of the financial management of our school; this includes the planning of our annual budget with the principals, following our economics, and handling of all the orders and billing. She is also the magician in the wonderland of paperwork, so she is basically handling all of your papers.

So, how is it like to work as the school secretary in a school like Ressu?

- I do like it a lot. The place is nice and the society is even better. The wonderful adolescents are one of the best things in my job. It’s also quite diverse.

Do you think your job is stressful?

- Not particularly, but the strictly followed deadlines are sort of an exception. Especially when the marticulation examinations are approaching you have to keep on track with the application papers and their deadlines.

How is the Christmas of our school secretary like?

- I’m enjoying Christmas with a small group of relatives, following our old traditions. I’m making food at home, we’re decorating the place to look all fancy, we drink a lot of glögi and search for the almonds in our porridge. Even though I consider myself as a Christmas person, I usually leave everything to the last minute. The hurry gives Christmas its own special feeling, though.

Tarja still wants to wish every ressu a wonderful and peaceful Christmas! Xmas holidays is the time when we catch up on all the assignments and essays we’ve left undone, right? Remember to rest, fellas!
